CONTROVERSIAL plans to turn Ammanford’s former Woolworths store into a lap-dancing club are set to cause uproar.

The proposal – due up before county planners shortly – is the brainchild of Dublin-based entrepreneur Mal Brodie.

The Irish racehorse owner, who along with dancers Sarah and Emma was leafleting shoppers in Quay Street on Monday, insists: “This will revive Ammanford.

“Think of the trade this will bring in, including punters from the new racecourse at Trimsaran.”

And as he shook hands with well-wishers and posed for photos outside the former supermarket, Mr Brodie, 56, pledged that ex-Woolies staff would be among the first to be offered jobs.

“This will be a pole-dancing establishment, not a lap-dancing club,” he added. “We’ll offer sophisticated entertainment for sophisticated adults.”

A presentation of his plans was being held at the Aman Centre at noon today (Wednesday) and budding dancers will be invited to audition at the Pensioners Hall during the summer.

However, Mr Brodie already faces fierce opposition.

“The county council shouldn’t touch this with a barge pole,” said local trader Sid Whitworth.

But town councillor Carol Cadman was keeping an open mind.

“We need jobs here in Ammanford,” she said. “If I was a few years younger I’d probably audition myself!”
