A GWENDRAETH Valley county councillor has renewed his call for action at a Cwmgwili accident blackspot in a letter to the Assembly’s Transport Minister.

Cllr Peter Cooper has written to Ieuan Wyn Jones, urging the Assembly to close the crossing point in the central reservation at the A48 junction in Cwmgwili and to introduce a slip road nearby.

The call comes following the recent tragic death of local businessman Roger Bowen at the junction.

Cllr Cooper has previously called for action at the well- known blackspot, following a spate of accidents and near misses.

In his letter to the Minister, Cllr Cooper says: “I am writing to urge your department to take a number of steps to make the A48 junction at Cwmgwili safer for the many motorists who use it on a daily basis.

“As I am sure you will be aware, the junction was recently the scene of a fatal accident and there have been a number of other accidents and near-misses at the site in recent years.

“I have previously raised my concerns with the Trunk Road Agency on a number of occasions to no avail.

“I believe that the junction would be much safer if the current crossing point in the central reservation was closed and a slip road was introduced on the site of the former garage.

“This was demolished a few years ago in order to improve visibility at this busy spot.

“I would welcome an urgent meeting with officers.”
