A TOTAL of 73 job losses at the Corus plant in Llandybie have been described as a devastating blow to the local community by its local AM and MP.
MP Adam Price and AM Rhodri Glyn Thomas say they have been left shocked at the speed and size of the job cuts announced this morning.
The pair are writing to the company requesting an urgent meeting to discuss what assistance can be offered.
They have also written to the business secretary Peter Mandelson urging him to back proposals to support the company through this difficult period.
"I am horrified at the news," said Mr Price. "Only last Christmas I held productive discussions with the management at the site regarding redundancies.
" I left that meeting with a very positive view for the future of the plant. "Obviously the credit crunch has hit Corus like every other company but the scale of these cuts and their impact on the Llandybie community is a shock to everyone."
