CELTIC Energy re-opens the Amman Valley railway line today to carry coal from Tairgwaith's East Pit in what is being described as a sign of the revival of Welsh coal.

The first train is due to arrive at East Pit at 12 noon for loading to begin.

It is estimated it will take around three hours to load before the train will depart down the Amman Valley.

It will then travel up to the Celtic Energy coal washery at Onllwyn before being distributed to customers throughout South Wales.

It will be the first time a coal train has used the line in nearly a decade and by the summer up to three trains moving 1400 tonnes of coal each, should be running per week.

Wayne Evans, Site Manager at East Pit, said: "This will dramatically cut down lorry movements on the roads minimising disruption to the surrounding community and significantly reducing the CO2 emissions of our operations."

East Pit returned to full production in September last year to meet growing demand for Welsh coal.
