Volunteers are being urged to unite against dementia by signing up for Swansea Memory Walk next month to help support the 1,248 already taking part.

With memory walkers gathering in such large numbers to take part in the event which returns to Museum Green on the Waterfront on October 13, Alzheimer’s Society Cymru is looking to increase their number of helpers.

Roisin Greenup, Alzheimer’s Society Memory Walk Officer for Swansea, said: “We rely on the support of volunteers to make our walks happen.

“Ways to be involved include anything from setting up to signposting, presenting medals, to giving out water or cheering on our wonderful walkers. We have something for everyone.

“Swansea Memory Walk, on Saturday 13 September, provides an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful backdrop of Swansea as people step out for a choice of a 3km or 7.5km kilometre route, starting and finishing at Museum Green.

“There are 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK. Volunteers are a vital part of a very special day.

Anyone interested in volunteering or walking can find out more and sign up at memorywalk.org.uk

“Around 43 people have put their names forward as helpers at Swansea Memory Walk. We would be delighted if we could double this number,” said Roisin.

“Memory Walk will help Alzheimer’s Society invest £150 million in research over the next decade and to provide information, care and support.

“That’s why every step matters.”

“Memory Walk has a lovely atmosphere and fabulous community spirit for people taking part as well as everyone who joins us as volunteers.”

Registrations close on Thursday, October 11 and the Memory Walk will take place on Saturday, October 13.
