Naturalists Chris Packham and Iolo Williams dropped by to visit Brecknock Wildlife Trust’s Cae Lynden Reserve on July 21.

This year, Brecknock Wildlife Trust’s ‘Wild Communities Project’ were honoured to have been chosen as one of Chris Packham’s 50 stops on his British Bioblitz tour.

Through a mass team effort, each Bioblitz aims to record as many species as possible on one site.

Cae Lynden in Ystradgynlais, a football pitch turned rare butterfly refuge gained a whopping 260 plus records in just a few short hours.

This was only possible because of everyone, from volunteers and local kids to university students and county species recorders giving their time, knowledge and enthusiasm for free.

Bioblitzers were also treated to the unexpected arrival of Powys born Iolo Williams, supporting the Bioblitz in Wales and boosting the profile of the Welsh language during the event.

Both Iolo and Chris clearly enjoyed chatting with young naturalists from the area about their insect finds on the reserve, which the kids had caught in pots to identify before release.

The Cae Lynden Bioblitz was a triumph of community action for wildlife. The Wild Communities Project could not have gotten as detailed a picture as we did of the variety of wildlife this one tiny reserve supports, without every single person who gave their time. We are privileged to have inspired young local naturalists.
