An analysis of over 2,000 British motorways and A-roads has revealed that the A40 is home to the most accidents in Wales and more road users have lost their lives on the road than anywhere else in the country.

The data, obtained by leading motorcycle and classic car insurance broker Carole Nash, following a Freedom of Information request to the Department for Transport, looked at all reported road incidents on UK roads between 2007 and 2016.

It found there were 6,887 accidents on the A40 – more than any other road in Wales.

The report also revealed that the A48 had a total of 2,258 accidents with 66 casualties.

The M4 had the greatest number of vehicles involved in crashes – the 10,583 vehicles recorded is 15 per cent higher than any other road.

However, it’s not an entirely negative picture with the findings revealing that the safest road was the A48(M). The road has seen just 24 accidents over the 10-year period, none of which resulted in a death.

Nationwide, Gloucester’s A38 was found to be the most dangerous, with 8,698 accidents involving 13,153 vehicles.

But, the severity of the incidents was greater on the A1, with 172 people losing their lives over the past decade, compared to 152 deaths on the A6 and 142 on the A40.

However, the findings reveal that the number of reported accidents has largely decreased year-on-year, with 25% fewer crashes registered on major roads in 2016 than 2007.

In addition, no one had died in an accident on 35 per cent of the roads analysed, including eight of the UK’s 51 motorways.

Carole Nash have also launched a road safety hub on their website, which it hopes will give road users the guidance they need to keep safe on Britain’s roads.

Rebecca Donohue, Head of Marketing at Carole Nash, said: “Safety is naturally paramount to every road user, so we hope this data and the road safety hub on our website will help provide our customers with as much information as possible to keep them safe.

“It is very positive though to note that the number of accidents across the country is steadily decreasing year-on-year, which is testament to road users and those who enforce the safety precautions on our highways.”
