An online campaign to re-open the outdoor swimming pool in Brynaman has attracted thousands of signatures.

Brynaman Lido was built by members of the community in the 1920’s but was closed in 2012 when Carmarthenshire County Council said they could not afford to fund necessary repairs.

Ever since the closure of the pool. Residents have been lobbying and campaigning to get the pool re-opened.

Eleri Ware, of the Brynaman Lido Committee, set up the online survey last week and within 48 hours they had had over 1000 responses and a stream of supportive messages on the group's Facebook page.

Eleri, who used to swim at the pool as a child, said: "The response has been phenomenal.

“There is so much love for the pool and interest in what we're trying to do to get it re-opened".

As part of the campaign, both current and former residents have been sharing their memories of Brynaman Lido on the Facebook page.

One person wrote: “Fondest memories of Brynaman swimming pool as a young child through to adulthood with my own children. Hours spend swimming and sunbathing. I remember when I was around nine, we had a swimming gala with local schools competing.

Another added: “I didn’t grow up in Brynaman but I always looked forward to summer visits to my grandparents because I could go to the pool.

“The high board was terrifying exhilarating.”

The group also had a successful day with a stall at the Gwyl Y Gwter Fawr last weekend, where everyone attending was supportive of the idea of getting the lido up and running again as soon as possible.

Jason Rees, a former user of the pool who helped run the stall, added: "The Gwyl is always a great community get together and it's that kind of the community spirit we can get back all year round if we get the pool open again like we're aiming to."

The survey is open until Saturday, July 21 and can be accessed at surveymonkey.com/r/YNPLKK8 or facebook.com/brynamanlido.
