A Cwmgwili schoolgirl has become the first teen in the UK to win a national pageant using a wheelchair.

Frances Watkins has recently been crowned Teen Natural Beauty Wales.

The 15-year-old, who was diagnosed cerebral palsy at 10 months old, has been in a wheelchair for most of her life but mum Marie says that she has always wanted to compete in pageants.

Over the last three years, the teenager has been competing in pageants up and down the country including Faces of the Globe, Crown and Glory, Ultimate Beauty of the World and Miss Beauty UK after being inspired by a popular TV programme.

“She always used to watch Toddlers and Tiaras on TV” said Frances’ mum.

“We didn’t know they did it in the UK, but when we found out that there are pageants over here, Frances wanted to be a part of it.

“She recently won the Natural Beauty pageant in North Wales so she is now Teen Natural Beauty Wales.”

To be shortlisted for the title, Frances had to take part in an interview with a panel of judges and also model different outfits which have been created by a family friend.

“Next year she will be competing in Spain at the internationals where she will be representing Wales - she’s really looking forward to it.”

On top of winning the crown, Frances, who attends Canalfon y Amanwy, is also the Natural Beauty Wales charity winner after she managed to raise more than £1,400 for Cancer Research Wales.

Her mum added: “To raise the money Frances held a curry night, her brother dyed his hair pink and was sponsored to do so, and we also raffled a Swansea City football shirt.

“She’s raised the most money for charity and she is the first one ever to win a national pageant using a wheelchair in the UK - I am very proud.

“She wanted to do it and she uses an electric wheelchair so she can go on stage herself, on her own.

“As a family we are so proud of her and we are so thankful for everyone that has helped her over the years.”
