A supermarket in Cross Hands which houses a post office is set to close it’s doors.

It has been confirmed that the Co-op store, located at Llandeilo Road, will close this October.

The shop employs 50 people in total made up of 34 part-time and 16 full-time staff.

Co-op has told The Guardian that every effort will be taken to support staff with finding alternative positions and employees will be able to express their preferences when the consultation period gets under way later this year.

Home Bargains is understood to be opening a new store at the site, and it is thought it will move from its current home in Heol Stanllyd.

The company also said that it continues to invest in Wales by acquiring new stores, citing the fact that it opened 10 new locations throughout the country in 2017 and that it expects to continue this trend in 2018 and in the future.

It had recently confirmed that a new £650,000 store will open in Ammanford later this year.

A spokesperson for the Co-op said: “The Co-op is moving forward with a clear purpose and momentum and, while this usually involves the opening of new stores, sometimes we also have to take difficult decisions.

“I can confirm that our Cross Hands store will close, the last day of trading is expected to be 27 October 2018. The decision is in no way a reflection on the hard work and commitment of colleagues, who have been informed. And we would like to thank the community for its support over the years.”

Peacocks and the village’s Post Office branch are both located at the same site as Co-op, and are also set to move as part of the deal.

A Post Office spokesperson added: “We can confirm that Co-op has given us notice that they are planning to close Cross Hands Co-op store, which houses Cross Hands Post Office in October.

“Customers should be assured that we are committed to maintaining a Post Office service in Cross Hands and will work hard to deliver this.

“We are currently assessing options to maintain service while we work to identify a permanent solution to sustain vital Post Offices services – from every day banking to a wide range of postal services - for the local community.”

“We have some interested parties who currently progressing through our application process so we are unable to comment further at the moment.”
