Plaid Cymru candidate Rhys Fisher was elected as the new Town Councillor on Ammanford Town Council after taking 66 per cent of all votes cast in the election held last Thursday.

The Captain of Ammanford Football Club received 237 of the 361 votes, leaving the Labour candidate Thomas Fallows trailing behind with just 79 votes, and Unaffiliated candidate, Emyr John picking up 45 votes.

As well as leading the town's football team, Rhys Fisher, 27, is a former pupil at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman and works at Coleg Sir Gar assisting those undertaking an apprenticeship course.

Speaking after his victory, Councillor Fisher thanked everyone who had voted for him, and for the support he had received from local party activists in the campaign. He pledged to do his best for the town.

The new Town Councillor for Iscennen ward, Rhys Fisher said:"I'm very grateful to everyone who took the time to go to the polling station and cast their vote. I'm delighted with the result and I pledge to do my best for our town.

"I'm also grateful for the support I've received from Plaid Cymru activists who supported my campaign and helped share our positive message with local residents.

"I think all candidates entered the election in good spirit, with all of us wanting to do good things for Ammanford. Now I hope to play my part as a new Town Councillor to strengthen our community."

County Councillor for Ammanford, Deian Harries added:"This is a fantastic result for Rhys and for the party. We're over the moon that our positive messages won through some of the negativity we saw from Labour.

"The local candidates were fantastic and engaged in a clean campaign, but we did see some very unpleasant attempts by the Labour leadership in Llanelli to smear the party and our politicians.

"That isn't how parties in Carmarthen East and Dinefwr have operated in the past, and it's not something the local labour party should allow their Llanelli colleagues to pursue.

"I'm delighted the voters of Ammanford saw through these smears and voted positively for our excellent candidate, and now Town Councillor, Rhys Fisher."
