A WEEKEND of motorbikes and fundraising is returning to Llandovery for the third year in a row.

The Llandovery Motorbike Weekend is being held in the town on July 7 and 8.

The event, which supports a range of charities, was originally set up to give the town an economic boost and soon developed into a chance to raise money for good causes, including the Wales Air Ambulance, mental health charities and veterans’ charities.

It was set up by husband and wife, Jonah and Sue MacGill in 2016.

Jonah explained: “I had just got involved in the Chamber of Commerce in the town, and we were looking into ways to help the area.

“Every weekend we have hundreds, if not thousands, of motorcyclists come through Llandovery to enjoy the amazing roads around here.

“The idea was to try and convince them to stay longer than they would otherwise; have them spend money on things other than a quick coffee and a cake.

“Then it started to expand into something else on top of that.”

The event began fundraising for different charities in its second year, and also promoted road safety awareness to those in attendance.

“We work with veterans’ organisations, mental health groups, a range of charities”, said Jonah.

“We now have universities and Coleg Sir Gar getting involved as well. It has become a real community event.

“Short of the insurance and licences, absolutely everything at the event has been given by people and businesses from Llandovery and the surrounding area for free.

“We have had no financial support whatsoever.”

The event will include live music, motorbike displays, community stalls, refreshments and entertainment.
