A Pantyffynnon sports club, which is aimed at physically disabled and hearing-visually impaired children, are celebrating the success of the launch of the group.

Khadine Sutherland opened Actif Kidz in January 2017 after she was struggling to find a sports club in the area suitable for her seven-year-old son Ioan, who has Spina Bifida.

The group is run by volunteers and parents and the aim of the group is to give the children the opportunity to develop both physically and socially through the enjoyment of sports, as well as developing their self-esteem, social skills and friendship.

Paralympian Clare Williams attended the official launch of the group last year and now Khadine has increased the age range to hopefully increase membership.

“My son went to a sports event in Cardiff two years ago where coaches recognised his talent and they asked me if he could join and attend a group on a weekly basis but that was too far to go,” said Khadine.

“That is what gave me the idea to just go for it and set up a group locally as there is nothing else in the area.

“We have around nine children signed up for our weekly sessions, but only three children attend on a regular basis,”

“Our age range was for 5 to 11year olds but we have decided to increase the age restriction, so children aged up to 14 can now attend.”

The club offers a variety of sports including cricket, basketball, rounders, bowls, table tennis and a whole range of activities.

Khadine added: “We would love to get more regular members attending every week.

“We have plenty of space for children in wheelchairs and we have junior volunteers who are taking classes and offering their assistance to our club which is excellent.”

Actif Kidz meet every Wednesday at the Footloose dance studio, near Corgi Factory, New Road, Ammanford from 5pm to 6pm.
