Join the Ammanford Fairtrade Group tomorrow for their tenth annual Giant Fairtrade Banana Split at the town's College Street arcade.

The Banana Split, which runs the full 100 feet, has become a major event in the town's calendar over the last ten years to coincide with Fairtrade Fortnight, a UK wide celebration and campaign raising awareness and celebrating Fairtrade.

Phil Broadhurst, Ammanford Fairtrade group member said: “The event has a real community feel to it as local people and businesses join to make it happen.

Our volunteers on the day from Ammanford Church are ready for action.

“Amazingly, we only expect the dessert to last half an hour before it’s been completely devoured, anyone attending will need to bring their own spoon and eat quickly before it’s all gone.”

To accompany the banana split, the Unfair Funfair will also be in town.

A series of locally made old school funfair games, with a twist designed to make people think about Fairtrade and highlight the unfairness that farmers and other people who produce our favourite foods and items face in a global market.

Julian Rosser, Head of Fair Trade Wales said: “Our nation’s first ever Fairtrade town is doing us proud again this year with celebrations and activities set to be as big as ever, however behind all the fun is a serious message.

“It is a scandal in 2018 that millions of farmers and workers around the world who produce our favourite products have trouble making a living.

"Simple choices like our cup of tea or coffee can make things better.

"With the help of Fairtrade, millions of farmers and workers can pull themselves out of poverty and transform their communities."

The event is being supported by local businesses and organisations with local company LBS providing the guttering to hold the split on tables provided by Gellimanwydd chapel with foil and the all-important bananas donated by the town's Co-Op.

It's all topped off with ice cream donated by local ice cream makers Frank's.
