THE official Town of Culture launch took place in Ammanford last week.

Guests filled the Miners Theatre on Friday, January 19 and witnessed a variety of local talent.

From singing and dancing to studying art work and drinking home grown coffee, it was all at the Town of Culture launch.

The project celebrates the town’s culture and heritage and acknowledges the abundance of talent in the community.

Menter Bro Dinefwr and Ammanford Town Council are working together to arrange various activities which will be hosted in the town throughout the year.

Ammanford Silver Band, Cor Plant Encore, Mess up the Mess, Dawnswyr Penrhyd, soloists from Ysgol Dyffryn Aman and Jac y Do all performed for the packed theatre and left a lasting impression on audience members.

Discussing the launch, a spokesperson for Menter Bro Dinefwr said: “We were really happy with the launch event and would like to thank everyone who turned up to support the project.

“The talent showcased on the evening shows how many stars we have in the town, and we have plenty of events coming up which will show even more of what Ammanford has to offer.”

Compere of the launch evening and executive board member responsible for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths said: “It was an historic evening which offered a taste of the broad culture that can be found in Ammanford - from art to food and music - and it was all hosted in the great Miners’ Theatre.

“It’s pleasing to see that the town itself, from individuals to different groups, have got a hold of this celebration and have taken ownership of it.

“There are some great events coming up throughout the year which I hope people will go along to and support.”

Assembly Member Adam Price said: “Friday’s launch event showcased some of the remarkable talent we have in the Amman Valley.

“I know the Town Council and Menter Bro Dinefwr have been working hard to help make the most of this fantastic opportunity. I would like to place on record my sincere thanks for all of the work they’re doing.

“My message to everyone around Carmarthenshire and beyond is to come to visit the Amman Valley and enjoy the rich cultural opportunities we have an offer.”

Member of Parliament Jonathan Edwards added:”The Town of Culture initiative is one launched by Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths who is leading the sport, heritage and culture portfolio in Carmarthenshire Council with an energy never seen before in county hall.

“I congratulate him for his vision, and thank all of those who played an important role in making Friday’s event a huge success.

“The selfless dedication of volunteers will be crucial in maximising the opportunities of our town status throughout the year.”
