A BRAVE 11-year-old girl has paid a visit to 10 Downing Street after being invited by the State Secretary of Wales to mark her incredible work.

Mia Thorne was born with congenital hemiplegia, a form of cerebral palsy, and has learned to ice skate in a year-long challenge to raise money for children’s charity Dreams Come True.

Although she relies on a wheelchair due to the fatigue brought on by her condition, Mia lets nothing stand in her way, and after having had a dream fulfilled by Dreams Come True when she most needed, she has taken on the fundraising challenge of skating – unaided - on ice.

When she was first diagnosed, doctors were concerned that she would be unable to walk, but she is an incredibly determined little girl.

Amman Valley-born mum Karene said: “Every time we went for an ice skating session she knew the consequences.

“She had a lot of falls and I don’t like seeing her in pain, but I knew how much she wanted to do it so I couldn’t stop her.”

In 2012, Dreams Come True made Mia’s dream of a break from the hospital visits and a family holiday come true.

They fulfilled her dream when the family needed it most, giving them a much-needed reprieve from the daily stress, endless appointments and frustration of not being able to help.

Mia said: “I am raising money for Dreams Come True because I want to help other children like me.

“It has been a hard challenge, but it is for a good cause. I had to make it hard, so people would sponsor me.”

Mia took part in The All-Star UK Charity Weekend, an ice hockey match at the Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff, July 29.

As well as raising cash for charity, Mia is aiming to change the education rights for disabled children in Wales, campaigned to find a wheelchair-friendly home for her uncle in Garnant and is also a child ambassador for Caudwell Children.

On December 11, Mia visited 10 Downing Street where she rubbed shoulders with top celebrities.

Although she didn’t get to meet the Prime Minister herself, the youngster met Paddington Bear and Tottenham Hotspurs footballer players.

Things don’t seem to be slowing down for Mia in 2018 as she has already planned a summer black-tie fundraising ball at the Celtic Manor Resort on July 21 2018 in aid of Dreams Come True, and has invited Mrs Theresa May to attend the event.

Mia’s original fundraising target was £1,500, but she’s raised over £9,000 to date for the children’s charity.

Richard Ashton, Dreams Come True’s chief executive says: “Mia is an inspiration to us all. Her commitment to raising money to help other children’s dreams come true is moving – especially given the enormity of the challenge.

Thank you, Mia for all your amazing hard work.”
