A MOTHER from Upper Brynaman has been fined for failing to send her child to school.

Llanelli court was told how the child failed to attend 84 per cent of school sessions between September 2016 and March 2017.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was proved guilty in absence by magistrates on Friday and fined £220.

She was also ordered to pay £30 in victim surcharges and £68 court costs.

Carmarthenshire county council brought 12 other parents and guardians before the court for failing to send their children to school.

Executive board member for education, Cllr Glynog Davies said: “Carmarthenshire council takes issues of non-attendance at school seriously.

“We offer a high level of advice, support and guidance to families in the form of early intervention to help ensure that all children in Carmarthenshire are able to engage fully in the educational opportunities open to them.

“In cases where attendance has failed to improve we have had no option other than to refer to court to ensure the educational entitlement of these pupils.”
