A Towy Valley dentist is set to face her biggest challenge to date and it doesn’t require any patients having treatment.

Jenny Fifield, a partner at Llandeilo’s Celtic Dental Practice, has signed up to take on The Polar Circle Marathon this month to raise money for Solving Kids’ Cancer which supports children and families affected by neuroblastoma, a rare form of paediatric cancer.

The Polar Circle Marathon, often referred to as ‘the Coolest Marathon on Earth’ takes place in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland and runners pass glacier tongues, moraine landscapes and the arctic desert.

A part of the route takes place on the ice cap itself, but the main part of the course is run on the gravel road (often snow covered) that connects the ice sheet with the small township of Kangerlussuaq, just north of the Polar Circle.

The grandmother is no novice when it comes to endurance running however and has previously taken on a number of half and full marathons, 10k runs and an ultra-marathon of 40 miles over the last decade.

Jenny, 58, said: “I decided to raise money for Solving Kids’ Cancer after one of my best friends lost his son due to the condition.

“This is definitely by toughest challenge to date but I am looking forward.”

The grandmother is also a member of the Sospan Road Runners in Llanelli and has been training locally as well as taking on local marathons.

“I took part in the Cheddar Gorge Challenge a fortnight ago, which was the muddiest marathon I have ever taken part in, and I also run the forest of bean last weekend,” said Jenny.

“I entered the Cheddar Gorge event as a mental challenge so I can prepare myself ahead of The Polar Circle Marathon.”

Jenny will be taking part in the 42.195km marathon in artic conditions which can hit as low as minus 20.

“I am flying out on October 25 and the Polar Circle Marathon takes place on October 28 so I have time to get used to the climate before the main event.

“This is something I have always wanted to do and hopefully I will raise my target of £2,000 along the way.”
