A family-run café which has been part of the Amman Valley for over a century is set to close its doors for good.

Cresci’s Café opened at 58 Heol Cae Gurwen back in 1905 by current owner Dai Cresci’s grandfather’s brother and has been trading in the same spot through the generations of the family ever since.

Over the last 112 years the café has become the life and soul of Gurwen cae Gurwen and now Dai and his wife Marie have decided it is the best time to move on to their next business venture.

The couple took to Facebook to confirm the news that they have accepted an offer to sell the cafe last week, but the official closing date is yet to be confirmed.

“We have been running the café since 2006 and after a lot of discussion, we think it is the right time to move on” said Marie, who is currently setting up her own cheesecake business on the back of the café closing.

“Our customers have been so loyal and 90 per cent of our customers come to see us week in and week out.

“They are more like friends to us now. It is going to be very emotional when we close the doors for good.

At one point the café was open seven days a week serving breakfasts and homemade ice-cream and cheesecake to customers, as well as catering for groups across the community.

Dai, 61 said: “The café has been on the market for years, but now it is time for me to enjoy myself and do things I haven’t been able to do.

“Marie is continuing to make her excellent cheesecakes through Marie Cresci’s Homemade Cheesecakes and I am going to take a step back and go to see things I have always wanted to see.

“I am going to miss the customers and the gossip.”

Customers have taken to social media to share their fond memories.

One Facebook user wrote: “Cresci’s was the centre of my Sunday night’s. Best gammon, egg and chips in Wales.”

Another added: “Here in Canada, my sister and I recently discussed how Cresci’s ice-cream is still the the way we judge all ice cream. Nothing ever comes close.”

Fans of the famous ice-cream need not to worry as Dai has confirmed that he will continue to take his ice-cream van up the Black Mountain.
