The Hearing Impaired Unit at Ysgol Parcyrhun welcomed a very special guest last week.

Pupil Hefi’s uncle Malcolm dropped by to present the unit with a cheque worth more than £2,700 - the majority of which will be used to purchase a speaker with a frequency setting enabling all of the hearing impaired children to hear and take part in singing and assemblies in the school hall.

Malcolm Davies has spent the last three months walking around the whole of Wales.

Malcolm decided to take on the challenge to raise funds for the work the Ammanford unit does with his niece.

Malcolm, who is a 65-year-old former Royal Marine, has spent much of the last 11 years walking various routes around Great Britain to raise money for different causes.

On his latest venture he has walked the the border of Wales via Offa’s Dyke path and Wales Coastal Path, anti-clockwise – a journey he started on 13 May from Carmarthen.

He chose to raise money for The Hearing Impaired Unit because of the ‘fantastic work they do with children like Hefi with hearing impairments.’

Malcolm said: “The Hearing Impaired Unit at Ysgol Parcyrhun is brilliant.

“Children come from all over to be taught here.

“I was a pleasure to raise money for them and I’m delighted with what they will be using it for.”

Teacher at the unit, Gill Brown, said the unit was delighted to receive the cash and were overwhelmed by Malcolm’s generosity and the immensity of the challenge he set himself.

She said “The £2705 will be used to purchase a sound field system for the hall.

“The microphones we use at the moment struggle to pick things up because of the tall ceilings.

“The system will allow all of our hearing impaired children to hear the assemblies and will make sure they can take part in singing and prayers with the other children.

“We are very grateful to Malcolm for what he has done.”

The money will also be used to purchase a new camera for the school, along with a musical session with ‘Bongo Clive’, and ingredients for a cooking class.
