Throughout September you may have seen people busily slapping mud on the walls of The Pensioners Hall in Ammanford?

All this activity has been working towards creating a stunning new mural for the town.

This is no ordinary mural, but a mural made of cob.

Cob is a muddy combination of local clay rich subsoil, sand and straw.

It’s mixed by stomping and squishing the material with wellied feet.

The final coat is coloured by adding stone pigments and includes some mosaic features.

Cob makes a durable surface when dry and will add all year round colour and texture to Ammanford town centre.

The mural has been designed and created by individuals affected by serious mental illness from Hafal Mental Health Resource Centre in Ammanford.

The mural can be seen from the end of the pedestrianised Quay Street or you can cross the road for a closer look.

The design is inspired by Ammanford's heritage whilst also shining a light on the future of the town.

On one wall visitors can see the Twrch Trwyth, the legendary wild boar that came pounding through Ammanford in hot pursuit by King Arthur. But if you step closer you’ll discover Ammanford's future pressed into the bark of those trees.

Dani Lee from Art4Space is the community artist behind the project.

She creates murals in mosaic and cob with community groups and schools all over South-West Wales.

Dani said: “I love to see people empowered to make direct and beneficial improvements to their towns.

"I hope this mural inspires further acts of beautification in Ammanford and beyond."

"An invitation extends to all to celebrate the opening of this fantastic mural at The Pensioners Hall on Monday, October 9 from 12pm until 1pm with tea and cake.
