Civil Enforcement Officer Jan Evans has found that learning Welsh is just the ticket.

Jan, who works in the Llanelli area, originally started to learn the language on a Welsh for the Family Course whilst working at Ysgol Saron in Ammanford, about five years ago.

She was glad of the opportunity to practice her Welsh with the school children and she could also try out her Welsh on her own sons at home.

Since she started working as a Civil Enforcement Officer, she has been attending an Entry 2 course with the county council in Carmarthen. She required some conversational Welsh for her new job and by now can ask several questions that are relevant to her work, such as ‘Do you have a blue badge?’

Jan said: “Learning the language is such fun. I look forward to the lesson each week. It’s such a friendly class and the tutor is wonderful. At the start you think it’s going to be scary –but it’s not at all. We all laugh and have fun.”

Jan has some useful tips for new learners.

“I would tell everyone to pay attention in class and try to do some work at home. But the most important thing is to start each conversation with ‘Dw i’n dysgu Cymraeg’ (I’m learning Welsh).

"You’ll get a very good response to that.”

The council’s executive board member for education and children’s services Cllr Glynog Davies said: “It’s great to hear that Jan is having so much enjoyment learning Welsh and that she is already able to put what’s she’s learnt to good use at work.

“I would encourage anyone wanting to learn Welsh to follow in Jan’s footsteps and sign up for one of our courses.”
