Gorslas runner Josh Griffiths has been selected to carry the Queen’s Baton through Swansea next week.

The Queen’s Baton Relay is heading to Wales from Tuesday, September 5 until Friday, September 8 and for its Swansea leg more than 15 familiar faces from the world of sport will carry it through the city.

The relay was launched at Buckingham Palace on March 13 this year, and will travel more than 230,000km across the Commonwealth before reaching the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on April 4, 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia.

Swansea will feature on the first day, Tuesday, September 5, setting off from Knab Rock, Mumbles at around 7.30am arriving at the National Waterfront Museum at approximately 10.30am.

Former Ysgol Dyffryn Aman pupil Josh Griffiths made the headlines at the London Half Marathon as the first British athlete to complete the 2017 course, with a time of 2 hours 14 minutes and 19 seconds.

Josh along with fellow Swansea Harrier Matthew Rees, who sacrificed his own race to help injured runner David Wyeth who he had never met, will be the baton bearers from Swansea Civic Centre to Alert Row before handing the baton over to Swansea City superstars Leon Britton and Lee Trundle, who will complete the relay.

Other sporting stars taking part in the event include Enzo Maccarinelli, former Osprey Ryan Jones, Alan Curtis, David Smith, Aaron Moores, Anne Ellis OBE, Kimberly Mpukusa, Andrew Burt, Chloe Davies, Osaze Aghedo, and Holly Jones.

Organisers are calling for the people of Swansea to be part of the event by providing a rousing welcome to the baton bearers as they arrive.
