The “most dangerous building in the Amman Valley” is continuing to be targeted by unruly youths despite warnings from an Amman Valley councillor.

Garnant Workmen’s Hall has been vacant for several years and The Guardian reported in June that former leader and County Councillor Kevin Madge is urging for action to be taken against the vandals.

Cllr Madge: “I have been informed that youths are still breaking into the Workmen’s Hall despite me issuing a public warning in June.

“They are entering the building through the shop at the side of the building.

“With the winds we had a few weeks back, the building is highly dangerous and I am urging the parents of these children to take action to prevent any accidents occurring.”

“CCTV footage has been passed to the police with faces of the youths so hopefully officers will be able to prosecute the vandals.

“It is unbelievable what the kids will do today. They are playing chicken but with fun comes tragedy.

“Parents need to tell their children how unsafe the building is.

“I have had to call out the council to board up the building around ten times in the last four years due to vandals damaging the property.”

"There has been reported that slates are falling off the roof onto people's property which is extremely dangerous."

Proposals were submitted in January 2016, for a 70-bed housing complex to be erected at the site, and Cllr Madge is urging the developer and planning department to hurry the process so the building can be knocked down after being vacant for several years.

“I don’t understand why the developer is taking so long,” added Cllr Madge.

“I am getting frustrated as officers can’t proceed with the development until he responds.

“He should be paying for the hall to be boarded up and not the council.

“I am now publicly asking the Carmarthenshire County Council what action they are taking to speed up the process of closing the hall and opening a new facility.

“The project needs to start immediately before someone get hurt.”
