A rubbish and recycling centre is set to increase the number of days it opens after a reduction in opening times led to an increase in fly-tipping.

The Swansea Valley site is one of the five across Powys which will see a U-turn on the decision to reduce opening hours, which was made in a bid to save £200,000 from Powys Council’s annual budget.

The changes saw opening hours at the Lower Cwmtrwch site move to between 9am until 5pm from Thursdays to Fridays and 9am until 4pm on Saturdays, but the change led to people piling up their rubbish at the closed gates, sparking a warning from Powys Council that CCTV footage would be sued to prosecute the fly-tippers.

The authority also considered a report into the effects of the reduced opening hours, and its cabinet has now taken a decision to increase the hours at its household waste and recycling centres to five days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays.

They also guaranteed to introduce a permit scheme for residents to use commercial-type vehicles and trailers for their own household waste.
