An Amman Valley fundraiser who has given over 40 years of selfless service to the community has been recognised with a prestigious award.

Secretary of the Amman Valley Hospital League of Friends Dilys Richards, from Glanaman, was presented with the Halen y Ddaear – Salt of the Earth – plate after being nominated for the achievement by her sister.

Dilys, 86, was further surprised when presenter Alwyn Humphries and his film crew from Tinopolis Wales arrived to make and film the presentation, which is set to broadcast on S4C’s Prynhawn Da.

“I couldn’t believe that everyone kept it a secret from me for all this time,” said Dilys.

“It was the biggest shock of my life and I couldn’t stand up when Alwyn walked in.

“I’m so happy that people think I deserve this award.”

“I watch Prynhawn Da when and I know Alwyn since he was in Morriston Choir.”

Dilys has been the Secretary of the group for the last 10 years and has been a member for over four decades.

Amman Valley League of Friends has raised a total of over £550,000 since 1972 and has recently helped extend the hospital’s car park to cater for more patents.

The group decided to combine the car park opening and the presentation of Dilys’ award celebrations, which were held on Thursday, July 20.

Jonathan Edwards MP said: "Halen y Ddaear recognises those who have given years of selfless service to the local community.

“Dilys is certainly someone who has played an active and important role in the Amman valley and the League of Friends in particular.

"I was delighted to be able to join the team at the hospital in thanking Dilys for her hard work and commitment to the local hospital which, of course, helps look after us all. Her Salt of the Earth recognition is much deserved.

"Dilys and her colleagues in the League of Friends continue to work hard and are already fundraising for a new X-Ray machine for the hospital. There are so many worthy causes out there, but I would kindly ask local groups and organisations to consider the Amman Valley Hospital League of Friends in their next fundraising efforts."
