A great atmosphere, a super turnout and terrific weather sums up the 2017 Tivyside Agricultural Show which can be hailed as probably one of the best Tivyside shows in several years. Last year, the equine strangles outbreak nearby dampened the whole event, but exhibitors came from near and far this year to support.

In the cattle section, it was a memorable day for the Phillips family of Plwmp with Balzer Elegant showing her winning ways yet again taking Supreme of Show at the Tivyside. There’s no stopping this seven-year-old British Blue as Elegant was also Supreme of Show at St Clears Agricultural Show mid May and Supreme of Show at Cothi Bridge at the end of thatmonth.

Five-year-old Ffion, youngest family member, won her child handler class with Balzer Lady Ladasha, and her mother, Jade who works at the Wynnstay Store in Cardigan, went on to win the British Blue Calf Class with the same exhibit.

Jade said: “I’m so pleased for Ffion. This was her second time ever competing in the young handler class, her first being at Cothi Bridge a few months ago where she won there too. She was beaming when she won the class and she’s looking forward to her next young handler competition. As a family, we are delighted to have taken the supreme as we support the Tivyside Show year after year.”

Supreme Champion Horse, judged by Evan Davies, was awarded to Danielle Fenrich of St Dogmaels riding her 12-year-old small hunter gelding Zander V Danielle is well known in the working hunter world having represented Wales and had a great result at the Bath and West Show this year standing in fifth place amongst the producers.

Her mum Karen said: “We are absolutely thrilled with the result. It’s their first proper season together and we are just enjoying him. We’ll do a lot more county shows as well as concentrating on dressage.”

It was icing on the cake for local Shire breeder Elfed Davies of the Blaencillech Stud. He not only took Champion Shire with Blaencillech Rosey, a barren Shire mare, but celebrated his 50th birthday on the same day. India Latter of Llangeler was Champion Mountain and Moorland and Champion Ridden Welsh with Rhoson Shanco and was awarded Supreme Local Champion.

Supreme Pig was awarded to the Welsh pig, Goldfoot Lucky Girl, a two year old sow bred by the Evans family of Troedyraur, Brongest. The family is well known for its success in the show ring with its pigs at local and national level, including several wins at the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show.

The Supreme Champion Sheep was awarded to Gwynne Davies with his sheep ‘Any Hill breed and this following Gwynne winning several classes with his sheep throughout the day.

“It was a very successful day,” said show secretary Eleanor Colbourne. She added: “ Entries were up and the weather was kind and we’d like to thank everyone for attending – our exhibitors and spectators. A huge thank you also to everyone who sponsored the show, especially our main sponsor Meirion Evans of Brongest.”
