Parents at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman have petitioned the school for a summer uniform to be introduced.

Yesterday afternoon, the school announced that pupils will be allowed to wear sports kit for the rest for the week due to the soaring temperatures.

An online petition gathered pace and within two days of going live had been signed over 400 times.

Polly Powell launched the campaign after her son was threatened with detention for going to school wearing 'smart shorts' rather than trousers on Monday.

Polly said the school called her on Monday and demanded someone bring in trousers for her son Jack, but no one was available to.

She said that Jack was warned he would receive a detention if he did not wear trousers on Tuesday.

“My son has end of year exams and he wasn't going to be able to concentrate’.”

On Tuesday afternoon, the school informed parents that uniform rules would be relaxed for the rest of the week.

Headteacher Nerys Nicholas said she was aware of the petition, but that the decision had been made in the best interests of the pupils in 'extreme circumstances'.

The Headteacher said: "Ysgol Dyffryn Aman has responded to the recent high temperatures by allowing pupils to wear the school's sports kit to school this week.

"All parents have received a text message regarding the temporary changes to school uniform, and parents have been asked to ensure their children are provided with suncream and sunhats for protection.

"Water stations are accessible to pupils during the school day.

"If there are any issues, could parents please phone the school office directly rather than use social media."
