A Pantyffynnon sports club, which is aimed at physically disabled and hearing-visually impaired children, are celebrating the success of the launch of the group.

Khadine Sutherland opened Actif Kidz in January after she was struggling to find a sports club in the area suitable for her seven-year-old son Ioan, who has Spina Bifida.

On May 31, club members along with residents from across the community attended the official launch of Actif Kidz and Khadine was delighted with the turn out.

Paralympian Clare Williams attended the event and Darren Carew took a 30 minute session with the children.

Khadine, 31, said: “The group is run by volunteers and parents, with the initial help of Lisa Pudner, Carmarthenshire's Disability Sport Wales Development Officer - and the aim of the group is to give the children the opportunity to develop both physically and socially through the enjoyment of sports, as well as developing their self-esteem, social skills and friendship.

"Last year, my son went to a sports event in Cardiff where coaches recognised his talent, they asked me if he could join and attend a group on a weekly basis but that was too far to go.

“That is what gave me the idea to just go for it and set up a group locally as there is nothing else in the area.

“The launch was fantastic with over 30 children taking part.

“Although the event was to raise awareness for the club itself, we managed to raise £320 on the day for the club which is excellent.”

In just five months, Actif Kidz has attracted 12 registered children and membership is continuing to grow.

Khadine added: "We have been awarded a community chest grant of £1,500 and we currently have a token collection in Tesco where shoppers can vote for us to receive more funding.”

Actif Kidz meet every Wednesday at the Footloose dance studio, near Corgi Factory, New Road, Ammanford from 5pm to 6pm.
