Pupils from year 5 and 6 at Ysgol yr Hendy have recently enjoyed the company of rugby legend Phil Bennett as part of their thematic work on Champions.

The former Wales international inspired the pupils with stories about his life in school and career in rugby.

Pupils had spent the week researching his career and took every opportunity to ask questions.

Pupil Jac Cromwell said: “I really enjoyed listening to how Phil Bennett had had a new nose.

Tom Llewellyn added: "I had shivers when he told us about beating the public schools teams, winning the sevens tournament and then taking the trophy back to show his PE teacher who was really ill."

Head teacher Rhian Kenny would like to thank Phil for his inspirational speech.

She said: "Phil Bennett was extremely generous with not only his time but with his willingness to share memorable life stories that the pupils would not have been able to locate in either a book or on the Internet.

"At a time when the focus is on improving boys’ literary skills this morning has been a huge catalyst."
