TWO Gorslas cyclists are cycling on homemade bamboo bikes from Llanarthne to London to raise money for British Heart Foundation Cymru.

Friends Dan Holley and Dr Adrian Raybould, Consultant Cardiologist at Glangwili General Hospital will be taking on the Bamboo Challenge by cycling the 230 miles on Thursday, June 1.

The pair will start off from The National Botanic Garden of Wales, Llanarthne at 8am carrying a medicinal plant which they will donate to Kew Gardens in London when they arrive on Friday afternoon.

Dan and Adrian created the Bamboo Challenge in support of the help Dan's father received when he suffered three heart attacks.

Dan said: ‘We decided to do this challenge as my father Kevin suffered three heart attacks and my wife Andrea has been responsible for organising the event and has done a wonderful job. We would also like to thank family and friends for all their help and support as we have organised some events in the area for the bamboo challenge and they have been so supportive.’

The keen cyclists have spent two months to constructing the bike frames out of bamboo in preparation for their challenge.

Adrian said: ‘We built the frame of the bike from bamboo and it took us two months to construct and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We hope to cycle 110 miles on the first day. We will be taking a Foxglove with us to Kew Gardens.

Each day in Wales, 25 people lose their lives to cardiovascular disease which can devastate those they leave behind. It’s thanks to people like Adrian, Dan and Andrea that BHF Cymru is funding pioneering research, central to discovering vital treatments for people living with these conditions.

Jayne Lewis, BHF Fundraising Manager for South West Wales said: “We would like to say a big thank you to Adrian, Dan and also to Andrea and also to all their friends and family for all their help and support in organising such a wonderful event.

"Too many lives are lost in Wales each year, and we’re determined to do everything we can to protect more families from this devastation. Around 375,000 people across Wales this month are fighting a daily battle with heart and circulatory disease. Each year these devastating conditions claim the lives of more than 750 people per month in Wales alone and thanks to the local groups and organisations in the area we’ll be able to fund even more research into these conditions.”

You can donate to the event by texting BBCH49£5 to 70070. If anyone would like to join Adrian and Dan on their route, please get in contact Andrea on andreaholley04@gmail.com
