The sister of an Ammanford estate agent who died two years ago has arranged an epilepsy charity night in his memory.

Organiser Jen Leigh is staging a folk festival at Dolbryn campsite, Newcastle Emlyn in May for SUDEP Action, in memory of Michael Morris.

Mrs Leigh, from Glanaman, is keen to give something back to the charity after it helped her following her brother’s death, while also raising its profile.

She said: “Michael was fit and healthy and only 47 years old. He had been playing football the night before and then been to work and was then meant to go and meet his partner.

“However, she could not get an answer from him and when she went to find him at home, it was too late. He had not had a fit (epileptic) in years.

“SUDEP Action proved a massive support. They were amazing and so helpful. They just explained everything to us and from that moment on I decided I wanted to help them. People need to learn about and be aware of the risks as I see on a daily basis how many people are affected.

“We have done a few things to raise money in the past but then the idea came to me for a festival.

“I have been camping quite often at Dolbryn and it is the ideal place to have a festival and the site owners thought it was a fantastic idea.

“I have never done anything like this before. It will be great to keep Michael’s memory alive, while there will be quite a few other families coming who have also lost loved ones. There will be sad memories but equally it will be a celebration, with all the acts giving their services for free.”

The festival will embrace a real community spirit - with local acts and performers on the main stage in the Mountain View Field, as well as family activities like story-telling, face painting and stalls.

Acts now confirmed include TangleJack, Burning Hat, Lazarus Carpenter, Paul Hayes, The Emporium, Homebrew, Daisy White, Hatstand Collective, Marc Gordon, Llinos Belcher, Mal Edwards and Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn Acoustic Circle.

And Mrs Leigh is not ruling out the possibility of it becoming an annual event.

“Who knows? Let’s just see how this one goes,” she added.

The festival’s main day will be on Saturday May 13, from 11am-11pm, with tickets £8 and accompanied children admitted free. Weekend tickets are also available with camping. For more information, go to www.dolbryn.co.uk/dolbryn-folk-festival or call 01239 710683.
