The children of a former Ammanford Town Council clerk have paid tribute to their late mother by raising money for a hospital where she spent her last days.

During her short time spent at the Peony Ward and Intensive Care Unit at Prince Phillip Hospital, Miriam Phillips requested that her children Rebecca Griffiths and Rhodri Phillips raised funds for the unit.

The duo immediately went about organising a charity fashion show, a pre-loved pop up sale and ran the Cardiff Half Marathon last year for the first time as a brother and sister team.

Rebecca said: “It came as an enormous shock when our mother sadly passed away on August 25 last year, just three months after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“We are extremely grateful to all those who have contributed in memory of our mother.

"She was a wonderful person, very caring and supportive of so many local community initiatives.”

Miriam established Ammanford Twinning Association in 1997 and had served as clerk to Ammanford Town Council for 22 years, during which time she introduced numerous community projects such as the annual Young at Heart Christmas Party and the Annual Ammanford Eisteddfod.

The large amount of donations from friends, family and colleagues resulted in the duo being able to raise a total sum of £4000.

Rebecca added: “We sincerely hope that the money raised shows our appreciation for such an invaluable breast care facility in west Wales and will also help to make a difference to other families experiencing difficult times.”
