Plans for a nightclub above Shoppers World in Ammanford have been hit with a string of objections from residents and town councillors who believe the facilities could be “life-changing” for the town.

A proposal for a change of use of 18 Wind Street to turn the first-floor snooker club into a nightclub, with space created on the ground floor reserved for Snooker World, was submitted to Carmarthenshire County Council last month.

Similar plans were rejected five years ago by the Welsh Government due to concern over late-night noise levels.

Applicant David Griffiths, who has a track record of managing establishments including the former Tycoch nightclub in Pontaman, resubmitted the application to county planners on January 18.

In the application, Mr Griffiths sought to address concerns by stating he proposed to work closely with local authority officials and an experienced sound engineer.

He assured planners that only “a small amount” of noise would be generated by the nightclub if approved, which would be “unlikely” to be a significant issue for the area.

However, residents of nearby roads such as Baptist Lane and Wind Street have voiced their concerns over the application.

County councillor Deian Harries and town councillor Wendy Evans have both sent their objections to the planning department.

Cllr Evans said that she “feels for the residents of Baptist Lane and Wind Street,” which includes women aged 92 and 87, who “do not want to be disturbed in the early hours of the morning.”

She also expressed her concerns regarding previous issues with late-night drinking in the town.

“We have experienced in Ammanford how alcohol can affect young people’s behaviour,” she wrote.

“Paul Pugh is currently trying to get the message over what drink can do.

“If this application is granted it will be life-changing for many living in Baptist Lane and Wind Street.”

Baptist Lane resident Nancy Thomas, 92, also submitted an objection on behalf of her neighbours.

Ms Thomas stated: “I wish to say that we are strongly oppose to the nightclub proposed at Shoppers World.

“Who would want noise and unruly behaviour on their doorstep?”
