Cwmaman community councillors have called on the council to repair a bus shelter which has been closed off to the public for over two years.

The bus stop adjacent to Bethel Newydd in Cwmaman Road, Glanaman has been closed off after the roof fell in.

Cwmaman Deputy Mayor Kal Davidson and community councillor Emyr Jenkins have now called on the county council to fix it or replace it.

Cllr Jenkins said: “I think it is time the county council took steps to repair the shelter. I’m aware there could be asbestos present, but surely that’s even more reason to remove it and replace it.

“The cost of removing and replacing the roof is a drop in the ocean to an authority that is happy to spend millions in Llanelli and Cross Hands. This is another case of the upper Amman Valley being neglected.”

Cllr Davidson added: “I use public transport often and I know how important a shelter is, particularly at this time of the year. At this particular stop pedestrians are being forced to stand next to a road which has a high volume of traffic, which is probably more dangerous than the shelter itself.”

The county council say they are currently undertaking a county wide review of all bus shelters to identify those which have been closed off to the public on safety grounds and those which have been removed due to structural damage as a result of vandalism which again pose a risk to the public.

The council’s executive board member for environment, Cllr Hazel Evans said: “We have several of the old masonry type shelters across the county which have been closed due to structural defects. These shelters require specialist contractors to undertake the inspection and assessment of the materials due to the possible presence of asbestos.

“As this is specialist work there is additional cost for the service which will require further review and consideration alongside available budgets. We do however undertake minor routine repairs on an ad-hoc basis on safety grounds.

“We hope to complete our assessment and determine the most appropriate course of action for this shelter in Cwmaman Road and several other shelters which are currently closed off in the interests of public safety as soon as possible. This will enable the development of a prioritised replacement programme subject to funding availability.”
