A Towy Valley teacher is set to go above and beyond to boost funds for a charity close to her heart.

Alice Sharp, from Llandeilo, has signed up to walk the Great Wall of China this September to raise money for Girlguiding, a leading charity for girls and young women in the country.

The Brownies leader noticed an advert in a Girlguiding newsletter and decided to sign up for the 70km walk alongside other leaders from across the UK.

The 31-year-old said: “I am a former brownie and I have been a brownies leader and district commissioner for Llandeilo for almost 10 years.

“I have seen what impact Girlguiding has on young girls and women. Yes we go camping and sing songs but it is also so much more.

“The group really boosts the confidence of the girls and they get to learn new skills as well as realising they are just as equal as men, which is extremely important.”

Girlguiding is designed to push members to their boundaries and that is exactly what Alice is doing in her latest challenge.

“I am not covering a great distance during the walk, but it is going to be steep with countless number of steps which I think will be my limit,” she added.

Alice will be away for 10 days and nine of those days will be spent walking for several hours including climbing the stairway to heaven on the second day.

A total of £2,950 is needed by Alice and she has already organised fundraising activities to help achieve her target.

“There are over 30 young girls in my group and we recently took part in a name the teddy event in which we raised £65,” she said.

A quiz night has also been arranged at The Cottage Inn in Llandeilo on March 8 and a creative competition at Eve’s Toy Shop is set to take place on Easter Monday.

The primary school teacher has been preparing for the main event by taking walks with family members and is set to be facing Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales, in May.
