An Ammanford primary school has taken part in a fundraising sing song with a twist.

Pupils and teachers at Ysgol Parcyrhun have learned to sign to take part in a sponsored event for a deaf health care charity and it meant they now speak English, Welsh and use sign.

The whole school took part in the nationwide fundraiser sign2sing, singing and signing a specially written song – Together – in the school hall on Friday, February 10.

It was an obvious choice for Parcyrhun to take part in the event for the third time as the school has a deaf unit on site as well as a popular after school sign club.

The lessons are helping make the pupils of the deaf until feel more inclusive as well as teaching them new skills.

The deaf unit teacher Gill Brown said that dozens of children turn up after school each week to learn to sign

“We’re so excited to be taking part,” said Ms Brown.

“Sign2sing is a fantastic way for children to learn how important communication is while having fun ad learning sign language, as well as raising money to help improve the health of deaf people.

“There are currently 12 deaf children in my class aged between three and 11 year-old.

“The pupils travel as far as Carmarthen and Swansea to come to Parcyrhun as we are the only Carmarthenshire resource base for hearing impairment.

“The after school sign club is also well attended and they all enjoy learning the language.”

An amount of £150 was raised on the day with collection buckets going around each classroom.

Money raised by those taking part is used by SignHealth to improve the health and wellbeing of deaf people in the UK and Uganda were deaf people are often isolated due to the lack of knowledge of sign language and cultural taboos surrounding deafness.

The charity also supports schools where children and their families learn to sign.
