A Swansea Valley supermarket has donated £500 to a nearby library as part of a national campaign to encourage children to pick up a book.

As part of national reading week, Tesco Pontardawe created a reading corner with animal-print bean bags and children’s books, loaned by the library on Holly Street, to encourage customers to take a few minutes to relax and enjoy a good story.

On Saturday, February 4, a story teller joined the celebrations at the store on Gwyn’s Drift, for the last day of reading week.

The story teller created stories to the delight of children, using music and imagination to weave an enchanting tale.

Clare Davies, senior branch librarian said; “It was great to see the store promoting reading week and encouraging children to open a book and enjoy the stories.

“The donation will help the library to support and benefit the community as we hope to increase the services we provide and update equipment.”

Caroline Thomas, store manager at the Pontardawe Superstore, added: “We are always looking at ways to support local organisations and groups.

“We felt a donation of £500 to the Library would both help celebrate reading week and draw attention to the important services they provide to the community.

“As it was national reading week, we wanted to create a space for customers to sit and enjoy a book, magazine or newspaper, and it was great to see youngsters enjoying a good story.”
