Charitable organisations in Carmarthenshire still have time to nominate themselves for a funding boost after Co-op extended the deadline for groups to apply for its membership scheme.

The Co-op is on the hunt for local charities to share thousands of pounds generated by its new membership proposition.

Charities supported by the Co-op change every six months and the convenience store retailer is now looking for nominees for the next round of funding which starts in April.

Members receive five per cent back on the cost of Co-op branded goods and services they buy with a further one per cent going to local causes as well as being able to choose the local cause they want to support from a list of 1,5000 communities across the UK.

President of the Co-op’s National Members’ Council, Nick Crofts, said: “Co-ops are in a existence to support their members and the communities where they live.

“I know the money raised will provide much needed funding for organisations who contribute so much to improving local life.

“The new scheme is proving extremely popular with five million members and we are confident that it will generate thousands for local charities.

“I would urge Co-op members to spread the word to causes close to their hearts.”

The funding for each cause will be kick-started with a share of the money generated from sales of 5p carrier bags in local stores, plus the profits from the Co-ops range of reusable bags.

Organisations are being invited to apply via its website causes.coop.oc.uk with the closing date for entries extended until Wednesday, January 25.
