An award winning barber from Llandybie has been approached by a record signing footballer to be his personal stylist.

Towards the end of last year Mathew Guerin, owner of Guerin's Barbers, received a message from Swansea City striker Borja Baston González asking him to be his stylist.

The 24-year-old signed for Swansea City on a four-year contract for a club record fee last August, and he made his debut in the Premier League in September so needed to find a local barber to keep his appearance up-to-date.

Mathew said: “Borja first approached me through photo sharing site Instagram in November. He told me to make contact with his agent first, and I have been cutting his hair for every two weeks since then at his apartment in Swansea.

“I have cut the hair of Scarlets players and other rugby players in the past but no one of this high profile. He is a £15.5 million premiership footballer player, so it is such a huge honour for me as I am also a Swansea City supporter.

"I have also recently received a message from Luciano Narsingh to book in for a cut."

As well as extending his business and being scouted by sporting stars, the originally self-taught barber is also making a name for himself.

The 29-year-old said: “I have opened hairdressers next door to my current business on Arthur Street, Tirydail, and hopefully going to open a salon in Swansea and Llanelli in the future to become a franchise.

“I finished in the British Barber Association Hall of Fame top 5 in December, which is a competition which monitors the success and work of barbers throughout the country through their social media, competitions as well as barbershop visits.

“In 2016, I finished in the top 5 of different competitions three times and finished third place in the British Master Barber UK barber battle. I was also voted WAHL UK barber of the week.

“My next aim is to enter the British Master Barber UK barber battle again this year and hopefully take home first place.”

Mathew is also entering the FHF Awards in April, and is currently waiting to find out if he has made the finals of the Great British Barber Bash.
