Work has started to prepare for junction improvements to ease traffic congestion at a key gateway to the centre of Ammanford.

Preparatory work is under way to construct a new retaining wall at Margaret Street as part of an overall phased plan to improve the junction with College Street.

The scheme will facilitate future road widening to enable two lanes exiting Margaret Street onto College Street and ease congestion at peak times.

Ammanford Town Councillor Deian Harries has commented on the latest scheme and believes it is going to improve traffic in the town massively.

Cllr Harries said: “The widen of Margaret Street is going to help parents and drivers who are travelling on Margaret Street in the mornings taking children to school and also in the afternoon when they are picking them back up.

“Currently there is chaos on the road towards the lower end of Margaret Street during term time as there are parents exiting both Ysgol Cymraeg Rhydaman and Ysgol Bro Banw car park by the co-op store, and also students and parents from Ysgol Dyffryn Aman further up the road joining onto Margaret Street.

"The new twin road system is hopefully going to improve the current traffic situation."

He added that this development is an addition to other improvements which are currently taken place within the town.

He added: “These developments are proving to residents that people are asking us to do things and we are doing them and making sure they happen.

“The improvement of the crossing near Wilko in Ammanford is starting soon. Public safety is paramount and these projects are taking place to ensure everyone remains safe.”
