NEWS that Ammanford’s multi-million-pound super primary school has been put on the back burner has left county councillors feeling “frustrated and disappointed”.

On Monday Carmarthenshire County Council’s executive board met to set out their five-year capital programme.

Previously the new school development was put into a 2017/18 plan. However, the latest reports see it move back to 2021/22.

Ammanford county councillor Colin Evans said he found it “hugely frustrating and disappointing” that the project, which has been in the capital programme for the last five years, has been demoted from a category A to a category B. He said: “No one is able to give me a rational explanation as to why it is going to be pushed back. I was always given the assurance that the school development was going to remain in the very near future plans. To me this is a political decision – where are the local Plaid councillors sticking up for Ammanford? Once again we see more money moved out of Ammanford.

“They say a week in politics is a long time but three years is an eternity. “

Former county council leader Kevin Madge said he was disappointed with the Plaid-led council’s decision to move the project date.

He said: “This is the first year Plaid have set out their capital programme and in my eyes it looks like Ammanford has been let down badly. As former leader This worries me and I think The decision makers have a lot to answer for. The first chance they get they move all money out of Ammanford – the Amman Valley once again is not getting a fair slice of the cake.”

Responding to the news, School modernisation manager Simon Davies said: “We are committed to investing in primary education in Ammanford, and want to make sure that we get our investment right. For that reason, and due to a number of unforeseen challenges, we have revised the timeline for the delivery of this project. These challenges have included an increase in pupil numbers, the availability of suitable land of sufficient scale and aspirations to support wider regeneration objectives, as well as the timescale of school reorganisation statutory procedures.”
