SOCIAL enterprises across Carmarthenshire are taking part in a nationwide event this weekend which encourages people to spend their money at businesses which put the planet and people first.

There are more than 70,000 social enterprises in the UK operating at an array of industries and sectors.

iSmooth Community Café, which is situated on College Street in Ammanford, is hosting a morning of fun and challenges on Saturday, October 15 which is also known as Social Saturday, an event which raises awareness of British social enterprises and business trade for a social or environmental purpose reinvesting their profits for good.

The team at iSmooth have plenty of activities lined up such as a milkshake challenge, plenty of music and dancing, cream teas for £2 and chance for customers to meet Dave the Minion.

There is also a children’s baking competition taking place at 11am where judges can see who the Mary Berry on Ammanford is and who’s left with a soggy bottom. The competition is split into two categories, category one is for children aged five to 10 and category two is for children aged between 11 and 16.

iSmooth development officer Debbie Elias said: “As we are the only social enterprise in Ammanford town we decided to get involved with Social Saturday and we have lots of activities and challenges going on the day.”

Splat Cymru is also getting involved with event this weekend. The organisation deliver imaginative, creative and fun art based projects to communities, schools and organisations across Carmarthenshire and further afield and their After School Arts Programme will be operating on Saturday.

The Black Mountain Centre in Brynaman is hosting a children’s fun day with activities such as story time, arts and crafts and Lego club.

Children can also have breakfast with Sali Mali, Sam Tan and Peppa Pig. The fun day takes place from 10am until 12 noon and is free of charge. Booking is essential and you can contact 01269 823400 to book a place.

Also, Xcel Bowl has discounted bowling on Saturday to all customers who say they are supporting Social Saturday, Y Cwtsh will be offering 15 per cent off all books on Saturday from 9am until 3pm, Llanelly House are hosting a costume exhibition which you can visit from 11am until 7pm and Ramps Skate Park customers who pay for entry this Saturday will be given a voucher to spend during a Monday to Friday in the following weeks.
