CARMARTHENSHIRE custody unit is moving to Ammanford from Llanelli as part of a police estate modernisation programme.

The current custody suite in Llanelli is the busiest cell complex across the force.

Dyfed-Powys police say as well as wanting to provide the best facilities for those working at or visiting the cells, they are also committed to the national work of improving custody suites.

The force added that the current location at Llanelli police station is becoming "increasing challenging" so the decision has been made to move to Ammanford as the primary custody suite, with Llanelli remaining as an operating overspill facility.

The move is scheduled to take place early October and will be a temporary move, albeit for approximately two years.

The long term plan is to acquire land in the Llanelli area, and develop a new cell complex and station there. The investigation work prior to an attempt to buy land is taking place now and it is anticipated that the purchase of land will happen soon.

To support the move a “Street to Suite” transportation service will be provided in Llanelli over the next two years. The service will provide a purpose built transportation van with inbuilt cells and CCTV. The service was successfully trialled in 2014. The service will assist to maintain police staffing levels and ensure a professional and safe transportation service for detainees.

Chief Supt Aled Davies, said: “We are kicking off a significant programme of work to improve our whole estate. We are working towards developing modern and professional spaces which above all else are comfortable, secure and welcoming. To deliver the whole programme will take time, but with your support and co-operation, I’m confident we’ll get there.”

As a result of the move the new opening times for the reception at Ammanford will be as follows: Monday to Friday: 8am to 8pm; Saturday to Sunday: 9am to 5pm.
