THIS summer a Betws fuel firm celebrated the success of its second Super Fun Saturday which raised £5,000 for two appeals.

Award-winning heating company Solid Fuel Servies (SFS) teamed up with TRJ building contractors to bring a fun day for the whole family on August 27, almost doubling last year’s total.

Revellers relaxed on the green and watched the cricket match between Ammanford and Pontarddulais with the youngsters enjoying the games at the stalls and inflatable rides. The evening included live musical entertainment plus auction.

This year also saw the introduction of a 26-mile charity bike ride.

SFS founder John Garland said he was pleased with the success of the event, particularly as it was postponed for a week due to bad weather.

He said: “It was a great family event and we are happy to have raised a large sum of money once again.

“Thanks go to everyone who came out to support the event.”

SFS HR Manager Ryan Jones added: “The addition of the charity bike ride meant that we were able to raise more money for fantastic causes.”

The £5,000 raised has been split between CCTAL Uganda Hospital Appeal and the purchase of defibrillators for the community.

Based at Ammanford’s Coleg Sir Gar, Cyfle – a building skills apprenticeship scheme – in partnership with Carmarthenshire Construction Training Association (CCTAL) and Engineers for Overseas Development South West Wales, have been hard at work raising funds towards a maternity ward project in Kachumbala, Uganda.

The unit – aiming for completion next spring - will hold two labour suites, a 12-bed ward, plus offices and stores.

The scheme has seen apprentices from the college travel to Uganda to work amongst the local tradesmen.

Cyfle regional manager Anthony Rees said the £2,500 has been a welcome boost for the scheme.

He said: “The existing ward currently has one room, and with around six births a day it is impossible to give the women any aftercare.

“This new facility will provide enough room to give them the opportunity to stay for longer.”

The remaining £2,500 will pay for defibrillators for the Ammanford area.

Ryan Jones added: “There is a call for more defibrillators in the Ammanford and surrounding area. The money raised means we can now purchase the equipment, as you never know just when a defibrillator could be necessary and safe a life.”
