MEMBERS of the Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK) group in Newport raised more than £200 at an event on Monday.

The group held a dementia and fundraising event at Duffryn Community Centre, along with members from the Walk Newport group, who hold regular walks for people of all ages in and around the town.

More than £200 was raised through a bric-a-brac and handmade card sale and an auction.

Secretary of ARUK Margaret Chaplin, said the event was a great success: "It was a great day to say there were only about 30 people who came back from the walk.

"They were all very good and all gave generously. A big thank you to Helen Goodwin of Tesco Cardiff Road as well, who donated and also helped at the event."

As well as raising money, the regional fundraising officer for Wales and the West of England for Alzheimer’s Research UK gave an informative talk about the dementia and the need for research.

The ARUK Newport Group, who have been shortlisted for an award by GAVO at their forthcoming volunteering awards evening, are always on the lookout for new members and volunteers to help them with their fundraising.

Their next event is a Christmas fair at Malpas Court in the Oliphant Circle on Saturday, November 19 from 11am to 4.30pm. Tables at the event are £12.50 and all the money raised will to ARUK.
