At last - joy over bypass decision

THE PREFERRED ROUTE for the proposed Llandeilo bypass has finally been announced- more than a year after a public consultation was held in the town.

The Assembly's new Economy and Transport Minister Dr Brian Gibbons revealed the news late last week and it has been met with delight by townsfolk who have waited over forty years for progress.

The chosen route- a modification of the existing 'protected' route- diverges from the existing A483 trunk road at the southern end of Ffairfach and, crossing the Afon Cennen and railway line a short way to the west, it forms a roundabout junction with the A476 county road.

It then passes to the north west of Ffairfach and forms another roundabout with the A483 before it crosses the River Towy a little upstream of the existing bridge.

The route then skirts the escarpment and Llandeilo to the east of the town alongside the railway line before joining the existing A40 trunk road at the roundabout north of the town.

Town mayor Richard Wallace said the announcement was great news, not only for the town but also for Ffairfach.

"I'm delighted that this decision has been made and it will rid the town of the lorries and heavy vehicles that have been plaguing the town for the last decade," he said.

"It has been a long time coming and it can only be a good thing for the town and Ffairfach too."

A Welsh Assembly spokesman said the next stage was to undertake various surveys, including those neccesary to prepare an Environmental Impact Assessment.

"The Assembly Government will then seek statutory powers to construct the bypas.

"At that time representations and objections can be made by the public or interested organisations and, if they cannot be resolved, the Assembly Government may hold a Public Local Inquiry, the findings of which will be considered before a final decision is made."
