ST JOSEPH’S boxers reigned supreme in Merthyr Tydfil on Saturday night with all five of the club’s fighters featuring on the Sanigar Events show picking up wins.

Gavin Gwynne tasted success on his pro debut, Morgan Jones, Kyle Jones and Ashley Brace maintained their unbeaten records, and Robbie Turley won for the 17th time in the paid ranks.

The St Joes coaching team of Tony Borg, Billy Reynolds and Junior Borg were understandably satisfied with another flawless set of results from their charges.

Super-lightweight Gwynne had a big height and reach advantage over Swindon’s Joe Beeden and couldn’t have wished for a better start to his professional career.

Confident from the off, Gwynne boxed at range and picked off Beeden with his jab before unleashing a big right hand.

He won each of the four rounds to seal a comfortable win and set the ball rolling for his stablemates.

Ebbw Vale bantamweight Brace was the only one of the quintet to triumph inside the distance.

Taking on Slovakia’s Claudia Ferenczi over six two-minute rounds, Brace dominated throughout and stopped her opponent in the fifth.

A stinging left from Brace, who now has four wins from as many fights, was followed by a barrage of blows that forced referee Reece Carter to step in.

Next up was welterweight Kyle Jones, who faced journeyman Ibrar Riyaz, a man with a staggering 102 defeats in 110 fights going into the clash with the Welshman.

However, Riyaz had only been stopped three times and that figure stayed the same, as Jones won on points (39-38) – his sixth success on the trot – but never looked like ending the four-rounder early.

It was perhaps closer than Jones thought it would be and you could see the sense of relief on his face when the result was read out at Rhydycar Leisure Centre.

His namesake, Morgan Jones, in his eighth pro fight, took all four rounds against Derby veteran Elvis Dube to extend his unblemished record.

It was a good workout for Jones and he came on strong after a relatively slow start to ease home 40-36 at the end of the cruiserweight contest.

Dube, like Riyaz, has lost a lot of fights but is very hard to stop, and so it proved on Saturday, despite Jones connecting with some pretty hefty blows, particularly in the last round.

It was left to super-bantamweight Turley to preserve St Joseph’s’ 100% record on the night.

His six-rounder against the durable Brett Fidoe always looked like going the distance but Turley was good value for his 60-56 triumph.

For Turley, it was his first bout since a brave defeat to Tommy Ward in March, and the Cefn Fforest pugilist bounced back with a morale-boosting win.
