A ROAD in Llandybie is set to be closed for three months as work gets underway to renew water mains in Carmarthenshire.

Welsh Water has applied for the temporary road closure of Pentregwenlais Road, near Llandybie, from a point 65 metres from its junction with the A483 for a total distance of 312 metres in westerly direction.

The long-awaited works to renew water mains through Llandybie that serves several communities started on Monday and will last for 12 weeks.

The old mains have caused leaks and failure issues for many years.

Local councillor Anthony Jones said the works were going to cause inconvenience with disruption to supplies and traffic but were essential to overcome the problems while at the same time improving the quality of water-supplies.

“I have insisted that all diversions are clearly marked” he said.

Fellow councillor Anthony Davies said there had been fractures to the mains being replaced over the year that caused particular problems with icy roads and dangerous bends over the winter period.

Mr Davies said: “It will be important that the hedgerows on the divisionary routes are properly maintained to improve visibility for all drivers inconvenienced until the work is completed.”

The alternative route for west bound traffic will be to travel in a northerly direction along the A483 to its junction with the U4401. At the junction turn left and continue in a north-westerly to southerly direction along the U4401 to its junction with C2144.

At the junction, turn left and continue east to return to a point west of the closure, and vice versa for east bound traffic.

County executive for transport services councillor, Hazel Evans, said: “Welsh water has circulated all residents who will be affected to let them know of the working timetable and the diversions that will be put in place and the ultimate benefits.”
