THE chairman of governors at Ysgol Bro Banw has stepped down, the Guardian can reveal.

The news comes as parents urged the leader of Carmarthenshire County Council to intervene at the school and called for the resignation of all governors along with the head teacher, Meryl Davies, who is currently on sick leave.

The revelations follow a damning Estyn inspection report which revealed substantial failings at the Ammanford primary school.

The report labelled the school’s current performance only as “adequate” and said prospects for improvement were “unsatisfactory”.

Meanwhile the leadership of the green-rated school was also considered “unsatisfactory,” leading a number of parents to call for resignations.

The report followed a rigorous school inspection back in January.

One parent, who did not wish to be named, said she felt parents were being kept in the dark, adding that such was the level of criticism aimed at the school’s leadership in the report “it was time for them to go”.

She said: “It has taken quite some time for the school to even acknowledge the report, and while a letter to parents states what the school aims to improve, it hasn’t done much to put our faith back into the leadership’s hands.

“I believe the leader of the council, Councillor Emlyn Dole, should step in and find out exactly what is going on and if necessary get rid of all governors and make it a clean slate.

“Only then do I believe that the school can start to make progress again.”

A Carmarthenshire County Council spokesperson has confirmed the chair, Huw Evans, has resigned and says a new interim chair of the Governing Body has been appointed to ensure that the school continues to make progress.

Robert Sully, the council’s Director of Education said: “Arrangements are in hand to support the school in all aspects.

“Should any parents have any concerns at all they should contact the school.”
